Auto Defrost vs Frost Free : What is the Key Difference?

May 25, 2021 Read Time: 4 Min   (43)

Frost Free refers to the freezers with a dynamic cooling system. No ice inside builds upon the walls, and you just do not need to do anything with the defrost.

Automatic Defrost refers to the freezers with direct or fan-assisted cooling systems. There is ice build-up on the inside freezer walls, and you have to remove it periodically.

Are all new refrigerators frost-free?

Frost is the moisture that floats around in your freezer. When it gets cold enough, the moisture sticks to the coldest surface it finds, which is usually the walls of the freezer. That moisture gets into the freezer when you open and close the door. Most new refrigerators are frost-free. Frost-free refrigerators eliminate frost by raising temperatures and prevent any free-floating water particles from forming ice.

Are frost-free freezers more energy efficient?

Frost-free refrigerators, as the name implies, do not require any kind of manual defrosting. These were invented to address the problems caused by the thick layers of frost that developed inside of the traditional freezers. This design allows frost-free models to work efficiently without the need for regular manual defrosting. In general, frost-free freezers are convenient household appliances.

Do you need to defrost a frost-free fridge freezer?

A frost-free freezer functions with an automatic fan that helps remove the warm air from the freezer to prevent ice build-up. These freezers help you to save time and make life easier as they do not need any defrosting. You do not have to defrost the freezer. Although, you may still find condensation and moisture build-up in the fridge. This new technology is great as there is no frost in either the freezer or the fridge. And, it constantly circulates cool air around both the compartments, which prevents any ice-build up on the cabinet walls.

How do frost-free fridge freezers work?

To defrost the evaporators, frost-free freezer units generally use a heating element. These evaporators can also be used in frost-free double door refrigerators. It is a pan that collects and then evaporates water from the frost that melts from the cold plate and evaporator coil. A defrost limiter thermostat is what turns off the heating element before the temperature rises too much while the timer is still in the defrost phase. There are a few models in the market that feature a drain heater by preventing the ice from blocking the drain. The Voltas Beko double door fridge specializes in this.

How often does a frost-free refrigerator defrost?

Frost-free refrigerators usually defrost automatically on a usage-based system or on a time-based system.Voltas Beko frost-free double door refrigerators activate a defrost heater in the evaporator section at the rear of the freezer. Most models defrost for approximately 25 to 45 minutes, usually once to twice a day.

Why does my frost-free fridge keep icing up?

The primary reason for the frost build-up is due to the interaction from letting the warm air come into the fridge freezer. To avoid this, try not opening the door too often and don’t leave the door open for too long. For any openings or gaps between the door seal that persist, you may have to replace the seal in that case. Be it a frost-free refrigerator or a double door fridge, frost in Voltas Beko double door fridge can never turn you down!
